Senior SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA)

JOB SUMMARY

The DCI Senior SQL Server Database Administrator is responsible for the design, documentation, implementation, maintenance, monitoring and support of SQL Server databases. This person is also responsible for the support of SQL Server database services to ensure the highest standards of availability, resilience, integrity, security and performance required by the business systems.

This position may require travel to various DCI facilities. Overall travel is usually minimal throughout the year, but depending upon circumstances, may be required with only a short notice. On occasion, travel to off-site locations and/or extended stay at those locations (5 or more days) can be required.

In addition to travel, this position is on call for major problems 24x7. Interruptions after normal hours are usually minimal but can obviously vary.

General Responsibilities:

Basic Systems Administration

  • Monitors, tests, debugs, and documents new, modified, and existing procedures.
  • Troubleshoots database errors as necessary.
  • Works within standards and procedures provided to meet goals and objectives punctually and accurately.

System Testing & Maintenance

  • Thoroughly tests installed SQL Server databases using approved standards and procedures.
  • Monitors SQL Server databases for expected performance.
  • Is responsible for patch management of the SQL Server DB and for ensuring that patches are applied in a timely manner.
  • Provides or assists with SQL Server database support and maintenance.
  • Assists as necessary in Disaster Recovery design, implementation and testing for both DCI and DCI’s customer institutions.

System Documentation & Education

  • Documents parameters of installed SQL Server databases.
  • Assists with the creation and maintenance of department standards and procedures.
  • Participates in system reviews to verify and ensure adherence to specifications and established standards.
  • Maintains current and up-to-date knowledge of SQL Server database environment platforms and related operating systems and software.
  • Participates in both on-the-job and structured training as necessary to maintain and enhance required knowledge.

Problem Solving & Needs Analysis

  • Promptly responds to SQL Server database errors and emergency problems encountered by our internal and in-house customer systems.
  • Investigates all problems and errors reported or detected in a timely manner.
  • Assists in studying and analyzing SQL Server database functions, methods and procedures. From this analysis makes recommendations concerning the feasibility of revising existing database configurations or adapting new configurations to more effectively utilize resources.
  • Translates detailed specifications and/or functional requirements into structured scripts/solutions.
  • Assists in the coordination of training in relation to the SQL Server database environment.

Education

Bachelor of Computer Science, Information Systems or related degree and

Experience

Bachelor of Computer Science, Information Systems or related degree and, 4 or more years of advanced SQL Server database design and administration skills, 4 or more years of computer systems experience (Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.), Knowledge of SQL Server database administration concepts such as Always On and log shipping, etc., General understanding of computer systems, networking, etc., Organizational skills – assist with the planning, documentation and revising of processes and standards.
